December 15, 2017 – Vaughan, Ontario
Francesco Sorbara, Member of Parliament for Vaughan-Woodbridge, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor John Tory, and Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca, the Chairman and CEO of York Region, Wayne Emmerson, and Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Josh Colle, today announced the completion of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE). Following the announcement and ribbon cutting ceremony, MP Sorbara participated in the first ride on the TTC subway from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station to York University Station.
As the first subway extension for the City of Toronto in 15 years, the TTC Line 1 Extension is the first in Ontario’s history which moves across regional boundaries, connecting Sheppard West Station in Toronto to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station in York Region. Jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto and the Regional Municipality of York, the TYSSE is a six-station, 8.6 km extension which will provide residents with a modern, efficient, safe and convenient public transit system.
This is an historic public transit milestone for residents of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. The Federal Government is investing $28.7 billion in public transit over 12 years in projects like the TYSSE, which received close to $700 million for this project, benefiting residents, students, and businesses. Having an accessible transit system not only supports middle-class jobs, but also grows our economy and creates inclusive communities.
